From July 28 to August 4, 2023, Prof. Robert Spicer from The Open University, Dr. Alex Farnsworth and Dr. Cait Witkowski from University of Bristol, at the invitation of Academician Ding Lin, Director of TPESER, had academic exchanges with the scientific research backbone of TPESER.
Research Fellow Zhang Qinghai briefly introduced the research directions of the three experts to the researchers. This was followed by a lecture by Prof. Robert Spicer entitled "The evolution of the Himalaya-Tibetan landscape and Asian Biodiversity", a lecture by Dr. Alex Farnsworth entitled "How important is paleogeography in simulating the evolution of the (East) Asian monsoon?", and a lecture by Dr. Cait Witkowski entitled "The evolution of the Pan-Tibetan region: A biomarker perspective". Subsequently, the two sides carried out fruitful exchanges and discussions, and determined the key points of UK-China cooperation in quantitative reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoheight in the future.
After the lectures, the three experts/scholars also visited the State Key Laboratory of Tibetan Plateau Earth System, Environment and Resources, and had in-depth exchanges and discussions with technicians on biological indicators, especially the quantitative reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoheight using GDGT and leaf wax n-alkanes δD.
