A Delegation from the State Key Laboratory of Tibetan Plateau Earth System, Environment and Resources (TPESER) visited the China Office of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

At the invitation of Ms. Kou Manhui, Director of Communication of UKRI, Academician Ding Lin, Director of TPESER, Prof. Robert Spicer, Dr. Alexandera Farnsworth, Dr. Xiong Zhongyu and engineer Ping Fan, visited UKRI on August 4, 2023.

Academician Ding Lin and his party held working talks with Sophie Durrans, Deputy Director of UKRI (China Office), and other project leaders to explore potential cooperation opportunities between China and UK in the fields of scientific research and innovation. Academician Ding Lin, Prof. Robert Spicer, Dr. Alexandera Farnsworth and Dr. Xiong Zhongyu shared with the participants the progress and achievements of the Understanding Monsoons and Biodiversity Relevant to Landscapes and Livelihood in Asia (UMBRELLA), a model in Biosphere Evolution, Transitions & Resilience (BETR) under a scientific and technological project jointly cooperated between UK and China, and put forward the prospect of UK-China cooperation in the future. The two sides had a good and smooth communication. Academician Ding Lin pointed out that he hoped that the two sides would continue maintaining cooperation and contributing to the scientific and technological exchanges and development between UK and China, and invited the staff in the China Office of UKRI to visit the Laboratory in the future.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is the most important public institution for funding scientific research and innovation in UK, and plays an important role in formulating international scientific and technological cooperation strategies and policies in various disciplines and promoting international scientific and technological cooperation in UK. Established in 2007, the China Office of UKRI has contributed to the joint investment valuing at least £571 million between UK and China, and funded 804 scientific research and innovation projects.

The project Biosphere Evolution, Transitions & Resilience (BETR) is a cooperative research project jointly funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) through a bilateral cooperation agreement in 2016.

Academician Ding Lin introduces the achievements and impacts of UMBRELLA, a UK-China cooperation project.

Dr. Xiong Zhongyu introduces the commonly used proxy indicators for paleoheight reconstruction to the participants
